My Review

Characters

In this book you are going to see centaurs, gods, demigods, sirens, and a lot of mythological creatures! And of course there are mortals.

I really enjoyed The Games Gods Play because the main male character is portrayed as morally grey. Partially due to the fact that it’s Hades, the god of the underworld. However, you get to see glimpses of him that don’t quite fit that stigma.

Throughout the whole book his character and motives are slowly unraveled, but you never fully know what’s going on. This kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading. You learn to love him, hate him, distrust, trust, and then hate him all over again.

The female main character is cursed to be unloveable, which I found very unique compared to other books I’ve read. I liked the originality in this character, although at times she did drive me a little nuts with her indecisiveness and constant internal turmoil.  Overall though I love how she is morally good, and fights for the right things. Not just fame, victory.

Plot

The book primarily takes place on Olympus. Each god, Hades, Zeus, Poseidon, Hermes, Athena, Hermes, Dionysus, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Demeter, all choose mortal champions to keep for them in a crucible. The crucible consists of 12 labors, or challenges, that each individual god has put together themselves. Whichever mortal wins the most labors, their respective god is the king of all gods until the next labor.

Each labor is unknown until the moment each champion is brought to the arena and how to complete the labor is explained on sight. Although, the explanation is pretty vague. This is also a fun twist to the story as it keeps you guessing what will be next, and how each champion will compete.

Also within each labor there are surprise traps, obstacles and elements that you don’t see coming, and I love the creativity of it all.

Spice

The spice in The Games Gods Play is a slow burn, which I personally love. There are only two open door scenes, and if you’re not into that, they’re pretty easy to skip.  The spice in this book is a fun back and forth, and is quite passionate. I love how the FMC and the MMC interact and how much of a game it is.

Magic

In The Games Gods Play I don’t immediately think of magic, but rather powers come each of the mythological gods and goddess posses. Can you really specify that there is a difference between magic and powers? I feel like yes!

Overall

This book is going down as one of my favorites! Although I will say there are some cheesy parts when it comes to the writing, especially in the beginning. Once you get past it, the story is intriguing, pretty fast paced, and filled with romance & spice in-between. You get it all, and you just can’t put the book down!

Summary

The Games Gods Play:

Living as a cursed office clerk for the Order of Thieves, I just keep my head down and hope the capricious beings who rule from Olympus won’t notice me. Not an easy feat, given San Francisco is Zeus’ patron city, but I make do. I survive. Until the night I tangle with a different god.

The worst god. Hades.

For the first time ever, the ruthless, mercurial King of the Underworld has entered the Crucible—the deadly contest the gods hold to determine a new ruler to sit on the throne of Olympus. But instead of fighting their own battles, the gods name mortals to compete in their stead.

So why in the Underworld did Hades choose me—a sarcastic nobody with a curse on her shoulders—as his champion? And why does my heart trip every time he says I’m his?

I don’t know if I’m a pawn, bait, or something else entirely to this dangerously tempting god. How can I, when he has more secrets than stars in the sky?

Because Hades is playing by his own rules…and Death will win at any cost.

More to read?

The Games Gods Play will be a trilogy! But the rest is to be released!

Where to buy?

Since I go through books so fast, I normally don’t like to buy books brand new. For the most part I have found amazon to be a great place to find used books. They often offer great deals, and if you have amazon prime, shipping is free!

Get The Game Gods Play here from amazon.

Another place I like to go for books is a website called thriftbooks. Often I’ll price compare between this website and amazon. Thriftbooks used to be cheaper than amazon, but lately I’ve been surprised with amazon. So you never know!

The last place I go to for books is kindle unlimited. Believe it or not you don’t need a kindle to get the benefits! Kindle has an app you can just download onto your phone. This is one of my favorite features because if I forget my kindle, I can still pull up the book on my phone! And the app does a great job switching to the last page I was on in the book even if it was on a different device.
