Review

Plot

The realm in Spark of the Everflame is called Emarion, and is broke up into nine realms. The realms were made because nine immortal siblings, known as the Kindread, fell in love with a mortal of Emarion. The immortals chose to abandon their eternal youth and by doing so they bound their lives to their mortal lovers. Each of the nine realms was named for one of the Kindred, and that realm was infused with the patrons respective magic.

The offspring of the Kindred and the mortals are called Descended, and were intended to rule the realms and bring peace to both races of mortal and descended.

Although this was the goal, power and pride took over, creating an injustice and unfair ruling. Although mortals and descended are allowed to live in the same city, the descended are usually more wealthy and are the only ones able to afford to live in the nicer areas. This creates a gap between descended and mortals.

Characters

In Spark of the Everflame you will meet descended and mortal. The descended are the offspring of Gods who had children with mortal.

Diem is the main character. She lives in the mortal realm with her brother Teller, and father Andrei. Diem works as a healer, under her mothers mentorship and discretion.

Teller, Diems brother attends a school for the descended and is a large support for the family. Especially of their mothers disappearance.

Luther is king Ulthers nephew. He is one of the strongest descended, and is predicted to be the next king due to how powerful he is.

Lilian is Luthers sister and the kings niece. She attends school with Teller and is a very sweet girl.

Magic

The magic in Spark of the Everflame is elemental magic. The descendes come from different lines of deity. Each Kindred had a power over different elements, such as fire, water, shadows and light. These abilities passed from on generation to generation. The Descended are identified by different colored eyes and hair. Their eyes correlate with their powers. Some have blue eyes, others brown, and so on.

Even though descended are technically a mix of Kindred and mortal, the governing king outlawed children of descended and mortals. If these children were to be discovered, by law they were executed. The reasoning behind this law was to keep the magic ‘pure’.

Overall

You know, at the time of rating Spark of the Everflame, I gave it four stars. But the more I set on this book, I think I want to change it to five. Spark of the Everflame is living in my head and I cannot get it out. As I’ve started other books, I cannot get this one out of my head and just need to finish the series right now.

The spice was brief, and the plot is more about discovering and the cause of fighting for the greater good. I feel like the author did a great job of keeping things a secret and discovering more, while still being able to do a phenomenal job of world building.

Summary

In a mortal world colonized by the gods and ruled over by their cruel, magical offspring called the Descended, healer Diem Bellator yearns to escape her poor village.

Her mother’s sudden disappearance—and the discovery of a dangerous secret about her past—offer Diem an unexpected opportunity to enter the dark world of Descended royalty and unlock a web of mysteries left behind by her mother.

With the dying King’s handsome yet enigmatic heir watching her every move and a ruthless rebel alliance recruiting her to join the growing civil war, Diem must navigate the unwritten rules of love, power, and politics in order to save her family—and all of mortalkind.

Where to buy?

Since I go through books so fast, I normally don’t like to buy books brand new. For the most part I have found amazon to be a great place to find used books. They often offer great deals, and if you have amazon prime, shipping is free!

Get Spark of the Everflame here from amazon.

Another place I like to go for books is a website called thriftbooks. Often I’ll price compare between this website and amazon. Thriftbooks used to be cheaper than amazon, but lately I’ve been surprised with amazon. So you never know!

The last place I go to for books is kindle unlimited. Believe it or not you don’t need a kindle to get the benefits! Kindle has an app you can just download onto your phone. This is one of my favorite features because if I forget my kindle, I can still pull up the book on my phone! And the app does a great job switching to the last page I was on in the book even if it was on a different device.Â
