My Review

Writing

The writing in The Fellowship of the Ring and the world building are incomparable to any other book. Tolkien has an incredible way with words where he does more than just great an image in a readers head. Rather he immerses the reader into an entire world. Tolkien goes to great lengths describing each race, their physical appliance, temperaments and culture.

I remember the whole time I was reading, my heart was moved by the beauty of Tolkiens words. He has this ability to not only create a world, but build cultures, communities, creatures and languages.

Characters

In The Fellowship of the Ring you will find, hobbits, dwarfs, elves, wizards, dúnedains, goblins, orcs,  and humans.

Hobbits

The main character is Frodo, who is a hobbit. Hobbits are quite cheerful, curious and value simplicity in life. Hobbits enjoy a close knit community, as they are very loyal to their friends and family.

Dwarfs

Dwarfs are fiercely loyal, stubborn, prideful and humorous. Dwarfs can be a more gruff kind, as they value honesty over politeness. Dwarves take great pride in their craftsmanship and heritage, particularly in their ability to mine and forge. This pride can sometimes lead to clashes with other races, particularly elves.

Elves

The elves live long lives and are very complex in nature. They are very beautiful beings, but are also very skilled in combat and war. Elves often carry with them an air of nobility, and have a strong code of honor. They are also known for their craftsmanship, having beautiful architecture music, and art. They are especially known for their songs and poetry.

Wizards

Wizards are knowledgable beings. They have a deep understanding of magic and history. Unlike the other species in The Fellowship of the Ring, wizards have very different personalities and temperaments. Some are warm and compassionate, while others are gruff and corrupted by power.

Dúnedains

The Dúnedain race comes from noble heritage. They are descended from the Númenóreans, a once-great race of men known for their longevity, wisdom, and strength. They live longer than the normal human, which gives them more knowledge and understanding. The Dúnedains are skilled warriors and often see themselves as guardians of middle earth.

Goblins

Goblins are typically grotesque in appearance, with misshapen features, dark skin, and a generally unkempt look. They are a malicious and cunning race. Goblins thrive off of chaos and are often associated with warfare. Although they are vicious fighters, goblins are also known to be cowardly and rely on numbers in war. Unlike the other races in The Fellowship of the Ring, goblins have very little culture, and focus more on survival.

Orcs

Orcs are ugly and deformed. They are shorter than humans, but are much more stocky. Orcs are cruel and aggressive in nature. While they can be cunning and resourceful, orcs generally possess a crude intelligence, often focusing on immediate gains rather than long-term strategy.

Overall

The Fellowship of the Ring is a slow paced book, since Tolkien dedicates a lot of time for world building and cultural history. But if you know that going in, this book is stunning.

Summary

Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power—the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth. All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring—the ring that rules them all—which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

Where to buy?

Since I go through books so fast, I normally don’t like to buy books brand new. For the most part I have found amazon to be a great place to find used books. They often offer great deals, and if you have amazon prime, shipping is free!

Get The Fellowship of the Ring here from amazon.

Another place I like to go for books is a website called thriftbooks. Often I’ll price compare between this website and amazon. Thriftbooks used to be cheaper than amazon, but lately I’ve been surprised with amazon. So you never know!

The last place I go to for books is kindle unlimited. Believe it or not you don’t need a kindle to get the benefits! Kindle has an app you can just download onto your phone. This is one of my favorite features because if I forget my kindle, I can still pull up the book on my phone! And the app does a great job switching to the last page I was on in the book even if it was on a different device.Â
