My Review

Plot

Kendra and Seth’s parents go on vacation, and Kendra and Seth are sent to stay with their grandparents. The Sorenson’s run a mysterious estate called Fablehaven, which is a sanctuary for magical creatures. As they explore Fablehaven, Kendra and Seth discover the importance of rules in managing the magical beings that inhabit the sanctuary. During Kendra’s and Seth’s time helping and exploring Fablehaven they come across the Sphinx.

The Sphinx undermines the preserve’s balance and tries to seize control of its magic. As trouble escalates, Kendra and Seth embark on a quest to protect Fablehaven and its magical inhabitants. They face various challenges that test their bravery, intelligence, and resourcefulness.

Characters

In the book Fablehaven you find fairies, satyrs, goblins, witches, sprites, minotaurs, unicorns, dragons, and trolls.

The main characters are Kendra and her brother, Seth.

Grandpa Sorenson is the caretaker of Fablehaven, he provides guidance and wisdom to Kendra and Seth. He is knowledgeable about magical creatures and the preserve’s rules.

Wendy is a fairie who helps Kendra and Seth as they face different challenges while in Fablehaven.

The antognist in Fablehaven is The Sphinx, who is complex and has powerful magic.

Magic

The type of magic found in Fablehaven is correlated with each creatures abilities. Witches can brew potions. There are enchanted objects. And some characters are able to communicate telepathically.

Overall

Fablehaven was one of my first introductions to fantasy and I have been obsessed ever since. The story is through young kids, Kendra is 12 and seth is 10, Fablehaven takes on this exciting and very fun sense of adventure. The creatures they encounter are new, unique and mysterious to them. And everything is so magical. The feelings I remember from reading Fablehaven are those of awe and wonder. Almost like the magical day the easter bunny comes when you are little, or when you make a trap for leprechauns on St. Patricks day.

Summary

For centuries, mystical creatures of all description were gathered to a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic in a cynical world. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite. . .

Kendra and her brother Seth have no idea their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws give relative order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken, an arcane evil is unleashed, forcing Kendra and Seth to face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save her family, Fablehaven, and perhaps the world, Kendra must find the courage to do what she fears most.

Where to buy?

Since I go through books so fast, I normally don’t like to buy books brand new. For the most part I have found amazon to be a great place to find used books. They often offer great deals, and if you have amazon prime, shipping is free!

Get Fablehaven here from amazon.

Another place I like to go for books is a website called thriftbooks. Often I’ll price compare between this website and amazon. Thriftbooks used to be cheaper than amazon, but lately I’ve been surprised with amazon. So you never know!

The last place I go to for books is kindle unlimited. Believe it or not you don’t need a kindle to get the benefits! Kindle has an app you can just download onto your phone. This is one of my favorite features because if I forget my kindle, I can still pull up the book on my phone! And the app does a great job switching to the last page I was on in the book even if it was on a different device.Â
