My Review

Characters

In Children of Blood and Bone you will find people who posses magic bestowed upon their bloodline by the gods. There will also be spiritual creature and guardians in the book.

Maji: are a people in Orïsha that can wield magic. They are easily spotted due to their dark skin and white hair. The Maji are divided into different groups depending on the elemental magic that they can wield such as water, fire, earth and air.

The Guardians: are powerful beings who serve as protectors of magic and the maji, ensuring that the balance is maintained.

The main character Zélie is a maji who lives in a small town with her brother, Tzain, and her father, Zâl. Later in the book she will encounter the princess of Orïsha, Amari. Amari’s brother Inan is the leader of the royal army and has lead the effort in executing the maji.

Plot

Orïsha is ruled by a corrput king who fears the maji and the power they can control, making them more powerful than those who don’t. The maji in the kingdom of Orïsha face oppression, along with those who are in association of the maji.

Along with the maji, the poor face oppression as taxes are raised, making it harder to pay and these people are often paced with the possibility of imprisonment.

Amari, Zélie, and Tzain are on a journey to free magic and help the oppressed maji. During their journey Inan is sent by the king in secret to track down Amari and Zélie, to stop magic. Through their journey, Zélie learns of her power, and tries to help her people.

Overall

Children of Blood and Bone is excellent! I love the style of writing in this book, and the culture created with the characters. Children of Blood and Bone gives me vibes of Throne of Glass, but with a more cultural feel. I love love love this book, and the development of the characters.

Summary

When Zélie seized the royal palace that fateful night, she thought her battles had come to an end. The monarchy had finally fallen. The maji had risen again. Zélie never expected to find herself locked in a cage and trapped on a foreign ship. Now warriors with iron skulls traffic her and her people across the seas, far from their homeland.

Then everything changes when Zélie meets King Baldyr, her true captor, the ruler of the Skulls, and the man who has ravaged entire civilizations to find her. Baldyr’s quest to harness Zélie’s strength sends Zélie, Amari, and Tzain searching for allies in unknown lands.

But as Baldyr closes in, catastrophe charges Orïsha’s shores. It will take everything Zélie has to face her final enemy and save her people before the Skulls annihilate them for good.

Where to buy?

Since I go through books so fast, I normally don’t like to buy books brand new. For the most part I have found amazon to be a great place to find used books. They often offer great deals, and if you have amazon prime, shipping is free!

Get Children of Blood and Bone here from amazon.

Another place I like to go for books is a website called thriftbooks. Often I’ll price compare between this website and amazon. Thriftbooks used to be cheaper than amazon, but lately I’ve been surprised with amazon. So you never know!

The last place I go to for books is kindle unlimited. Believe it or not you don’t need a kindle to get the benefits! Kindle has an app you can just download onto your phone. This is one of my favorite features because if I forget my kindle, I can still pull up the book on my phone! And the app does a great job switching to the last page I was on in the book even if it was on a different device.
